White Water Rafting – Río Balsa Class II/III

Maquique's white-water rafting run covers 10 kilometers of Class II and III rapids on the Río Balsa — one of Costa Rica's most family-friendly whitewater rivers, thanks to a consistent gradient that delivers real waves and adrenaline in the upper section and calm scenic water in the lower stretch. The 2.5-hour river journey starts with the punchier rapids at the top, where certified bilingual guides run you through paddle commands, safety drills and swim positions before dropping into the first drops; after the peak of the action you float through calmer water past secondary rainforest banks, with realistic chances of iguanas, kingfishers, herons, howler monkeys and, in the wetter months, toucans in the taller trees. A mid-river break lets you swim in a calm pool and enjoy fresh Costa Rican fruit prepped by the safety team. Each raft carries a lead guide, and a safety kayaker shadows the group throughout. The tour finishes with a full traditional Costa Rican lunch (casado) at the Maquique restaurant.
