    The experience

Arenal Observatory – Birding & Wildlife Walk — Group Tour

This is the shared departure of Arenal Observatory – Birding & Wildlife Walk: a small group of no more than 15 travelers, on a fixed schedule, at a per-person rate. You share a VIVO naturalist guide with other travelers looking for the same thing you are — real wildlife, good light and an honest explanation of what you are seeing. The itinerary, the certified guide and the safety standards are identical to our private expedition; what changes is that the departure time is set and the group sets the pace. Transport is never shared: if you add it, it is private door-to-door for your party only.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails is one of Costa Rica's premier birding and wildlife destinations — a working macadamia farm and biological reserve tucked between Arenal Volcano National Park and Lake Arenal, at the base of the volcano itself. This 3-hour guided experience combines specialist birding with the best volcano viewpoints in the region. Trails wind through primary and secondary rainforest, garden edges, macadamia groves and creek habitats — a habitat mosaic that consistently produces one of the highest daily species counts in northern Costa Rica (350+ species recorded on eBird, with 150+ possible on a strong morning). Regularly logged targets include Great Curassow, Crested Guan, Keel-billed and Chestnut-mandibled Toucans, Black-crested Coquette, Snowcap and Green Thorntail hummingbirds at the feeders, Black-cheeked Woodpecker, Chestnut-headed and Montezuma Oropendolas, Rufous Motmot, Emerald Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, White-throated Shrike-Tanager, Long-tailed Manakin, Streak-crowned Antvireo, and — with luck at dusk — Great Potoo. Mammals are frequent too: Central American Spider Monkeys, Mantled Howler Monkeys, White-faced Capuchins, agoutis, coatis, and both sloth species. The dedicated hummingbird viewing deck is a photography highlight, with 10+ species within arm's reach. Morning tours (~6:00 AM) include a typical Costa Rican breakfast and are the most productive; the 2:00 PM slot includes coffee and a sandwich and targets late-day feeding movements plus golden-hour volcano photography from the mirador. Included: park entrance, food, spotting scope and bilingual specialist naturalist guide. Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone. Available as a small shared group or fully private.
