    The experience

    Caño Negro Photography Expedition

A dedicated wildlife photography expedition to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, engineered for photographers who need more time on subject, better positioning and full control over pace than a standard boat safari can offer. Typical day: 7:30 AM pickup at your La Fortuna hotel → arrive at the Río Frío dock ~9:00–9:30 AM → 2.5–3 hours on a privately chartered boat working target species (jabiru, roseate spoonbill, boat-billed and bare-throated tiger heron, anhinga, wood stork, three kingfisher species, purple gallinule, Northern jacana, spectacled and American caimans, green iguanas, basilisks, and howler and spider monkeys along the flooded forest edges) → typical Costa Rican lunch ~12:30–1:30 PM → return drive to La Fortuna arriving 4:30–5:00 PM depending on your hotel. Because the boat is private, you can stop as long as needed at each subject, reposition for the light, and shoot low-angle from a stable platform without a group schedule. Your bilingual naturalist and photo guide understands exposure, background separation and behavior prediction. Includes boat charter, guide, park fees, lunch, bottled water and fresh fruit onboard. Transport is not included — we quote it separately by hotel and zone. Please note: breakfast is not included — request a breakfast box at your hotel the night before or eat before the 7:30 AM pickup. Peak density: December–April; migrant activity: October–March. Suitable for intermediate to advanced wildlife photographers with a 300 mm+ lens.
