Costa Rica Transfer Times & Prices 2026 (SJO & LIR)

Costa Rica looks small on a map and drives large in real life. Mountain roads, single-lane bridges and rain turn 120 km into three hours. These are the drive times and 2026 private transfer prices we actually operate, so you can build an itinerary that survives contact with the road.

Drive times between the main bases

    • SJO airport → La Fortuna — 3 h (130 km) • LIR airport → La Fortuna — 3 h (145 km) • La Fortuna → Monteverde — 3–3.5 h (130 km) • La Fortuna → Manuel Antonio — 4.5 h (230 km) • SJO → Manuel Antonio — 3 h (160 km) • LIR → Tamarindo — 1 h 15 min • La Fortuna → Boca Tapada — 2 h These are honest door-to-door figures including the slow sections, not optimistic map estimates.

The rule that saves itineraries: two nights minimum

Never book a single night in a base that is more than two hours from the previous one. With a 9 AM departure and a 3-hour drive you arrive at noon, check in at 2 PM, and by the time you could do anything the day is gone — then you leave the next morning. Two nights per base means one clean full day of activities. Three destinations in ten days beats five destinations in ten days, every time.

    Which travel days to avoid

Leave any base before 8:00 AM or after 9:30 AM to skip local school and commuter traffic. Avoid arriving anywhere after dark on your first two days while you are still adjusting. In the green season (May–November) afternoon rain is heaviest between 2 and 5 PM. Morning departures are consistently faster, drier and less nauseating on mountain roads.

    Transfer or rental car?

Rental wins when you change base four or more times, travel with small children on your own schedule, or want remote lodges. Transfers win when you stay 3–4 nights per base and take guided tours with hotel pickup — after mandatory liability insurance, fuel and parking, a rental in Costa Rica rarely lands where the sticker price suggests. The combination most of our guests end up with: private transfers between bases, guided tours with pickup inside each base, and no rental at all.

Planning a route with tours already attached

Transfer days are the skeleton; the tours are the trip. Once your bases are fixed, slot one anchor activity per full day — a wildlife walk in the morning when animals are active, and something relaxed like the La Fortuna waterfall or hot springs in the afternoon. Our itinerary builder lets you place tours by day and share the plan before anything is charged.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from La Fortuna to Monteverde?

3 to 3.5 hours by road for about 130 km. The jeep-boat-jeep crossing over Lake Arenal takes a similar time and is more scenic.

What does a private transfer cost in Costa Rica in 2026?

Between $165 and $240 per vehicle for the main routes from SJO or LIR, VAT included, for up to 6 passengers in a sedan.

How many destinations should I plan in ten days?

Three, with at least two nights in each. Five bases in ten days means half your holiday is spent in a vehicle rather than in the forest.

Is it better to travel in the morning or afternoon?

Morning. Departures between 8:00 and 9:30 AM avoid commuter traffic and the heavy afternoon rain that slows mountain roads from May to November.

Do private transfers include stops along the way?

Yes. Short stops for coffee, viewpoints, fruit stands or photos are included in the flat rate — just tell your driver what you want to see.

Can you combine a transfer with a tour on the same day?

Often yes. A common example is stopping at a wildlife reserve or the Tárcoles crocodile bridge en route; we quote it as one combined service.
