SJO Airport Transfers to La Fortuna: FAQ (2026)

San José International (SJO) is where most Costa Rica trips begin, and the transfer out of it is the part travellers ask us about most. This is the practical version: where the driver waits, how long the drive really takes, what a private transfer costs in 2026, and what happens when your flight lands late.

How long is the drive from SJO to La Fortuna?

About 3 hours of pure driving for roughly 130 km. Add 20–30 minutes if you leave SJO between 6:00 and 9:00 AM or between 4:00 and 7:00 PM, when traffic through the Central Valley builds up. Most guests break the trip with one short stop for coffee or a local soda — that is included, not an extra.

Where exactly does the driver meet you?

Right outside the international arrivals doors, in the covered meeting area, holding a sign with your name. You do not need to call anyone or find a counter inside the terminal. Our dispatcher tracks your flight number, so if you land early or late the driver adjusts — you are never charged a waiting fee for airline delays. We ask for your flight number, airline and arrival time at booking precisely so nobody is standing around guessing.

What does a private SJO transfer cost in 2026?

From $165 USD per vehicle for a sedan carrying up to 6 passengers on the SJO → La Fortuna route — a flat price per vehicle, not per person, with 13% VAT already included. Vans for 7–10 passengers and extra luggage are quoted on request. The rate covers door-to-door service, a bilingual driver, insurance, bottled water and short stops along the way. There is no surcharge for night arrivals on this route.

What if my flight lands at 10 PM?

We still drive it. The road to La Fortuna is paved the whole way and we run late arrivals regularly. Two honest caveats: you will not see any scenery, and hotels in La Fortuna often close their front desk around 10:00 PM, so tell your hotel your estimated arrival time before you fly. If your flight lands after 9:00 PM, an alternative many travellers prefer is one night near Alajuela (15 minutes from SJO) and a fresh morning drive to Arenal — you arrive by 11 AM and keep the whole first day.

    Luggage, car seats and surfboards

A sedan comfortably fits 4 adults with 4 large suitcases, or 6 adults with carry-on-sized bags. If you are 5–6 people with full luggage, book the van. Child car seats are free but must be requested at booking — Costa Rican law requires them for children under 12 or shorter than 1.45 m. Surfboards, bicycles and camera pelicases need a van and a heads-up so we assign the right vehicle.

Should you rent a car instead?

If your plan is La Fortuna → Monteverde → Manuel Antonio with several base changes, a rental usually wins on flexibility. If you are staying 3–4 nights in La Fortuna and taking guided tours with hotel pickup, transfers are almost always cheaper once you add mandatory Costa Rican liability insurance, fuel and parking. A useful middle path: private transfer in from SJO, rental picked up in La Fortuna for the days you actually need it.

What to book for your first full day in Arenal

Arrive-day evenings work best with something low effort. For the first full day, guests most often pick a morning sloth and birding walk at Bogarín — the jet lag window from 6 to 9 AM is exactly when wildlife is most active — followed by hot springs in the afternoon. The 1968 lava-trail walk and Mistico hanging bridges are the other two classics, both with hotel pickup included.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the transfer from SJO airport to La Fortuna?

About 3 hours of driving for 130 km, plus 20–30 minutes if you travel during Central Valley rush hour. Short stops for coffee do not change the price.

How much is a private transfer from SJO to La Fortuna in 2026?

From $165 USD per vehicle for a sedan with up to 6 passengers, VAT included. It is a flat vehicle rate, so the cost per person drops as your group grows.

Where does the driver wait at SJO airport?

In the covered meeting area just outside international arrivals, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight, so delays do not cost you a waiting fee.

Do you provide child car seats?

Yes, free of charge, but you must request them when booking. Costa Rican law requires a seat for children under 12 or under 1.45 m tall.

Is it safe to drive from SJO to La Fortuna at night?

Yes — the route is fully paved and we run night arrivals regularly. You just miss the scenery, and many La Fortuna hotels close reception around 10:00 PM.

Is a shared shuttle cheaper than a private transfer?

Per person, yes, for one or two travellers. From three people up, the flat private rate is usually similar or cheaper, and you leave when you land instead of waiting for a fixed departure.

Tell us your flight number and hotel and we will quote your private SJO transfer — flat rate per vehicle, no per-person pricing, confirmed before you pay.
