Frequently Asked Questions
Is Liberia airport closer to La Fortuna than San José?
They are almost identical — Liberia is about 145 km and San José is about 130 km, both roughly a 3-hour private transfer. There is no meaningful time savings either way.
Which airport is cheaper to fly into?
San José (SJO) usually has slightly cheaper international fares and more daily flights, but Liberia (LIR) can be competitive on direct routes from Miami, Houston, Dallas and Newark. Always check both.
Can I do a private transfer from Liberia to La Fortuna the same day I land?
Yes — as long as your flight lands before roughly 6:00 PM. For later arrivals we recommend a night near the airport and driving in the morning, since mountain roads have no lighting.
Should I rent a car or take a private transfer to La Fortuna?
For most travelers a private transfer is more relaxing, cheaper than a rental for short stays, and eliminates the stress of unfamiliar roads. A rental only makes sense for 2+ weeks with lots of independent driving.
Can VIVO Expeditions arrange transfers from both airports?
Yes, we run daily private transfers from SJO and LIR to La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste. Bilingual drivers, insured vehicles, door-to-door pickup.
