Flight options

San José (SJO / Juan Santamaría) is Costa Rica's main international hub. Every major North American, European, and Latin American carrier flies here — usually more daily options and slightly better prices, especially outside peak season. Liberia (LIR / Daniel Oduber) is smaller but well-connected from the US: direct flights from Miami, Houston, Dallas, Newark, Atlanta, Charlotte, Denver, Chicago, Toronto and a handful of European charters in high season. If you can find a good LIR flight, it is often the more relaxing airport — smaller, faster immigration, easier bag pickup.

When Liberia (LIR) is the smart choice

• Your trip combines beach + Arenal: land in Liberia, do 3–4 nights in Guanacaste (Tamarindo, Nosara, Papagayo, Playa Hermosa), then transfer east to La Fortuna. • You want the shortest possible drive on arrival day (Guanacaste roads are flat and fast). • You are traveling with young kids or elderly parents and want a smaller, calmer airport. • Your itinerary ends on the Pacific coast — flying open-jaw LIR-in / SJO-out (or vice versa) avoids backtracking.

When San José (SJO) is the smart choice

• You are combining La Fortuna with the Central Valley (Poás Volcano, coffee tours, San José city). • Your next stop is Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero or the Caribbean coast — all easier to reach from SJO. • You need more flight options, red-eye arrivals, or a specific airline. • Budget matters: SJO usually has slightly cheaper international fares.

Late-night arrivals: what we recommend

If your flight lands after 8:00 PM at either airport, we usually suggest one night near the airport instead of driving straight to La Fortuna in the dark. Costa Rica's mountain roads have no street lighting, and wildlife on the road is real. We can arrange a night near SJO (Alajuela) or LIR and pick you up rested the next morning — just ask.

Open-jaw itineraries (fly into one, out of the other)

For 8+ day trips, an open-jaw flight (e.g., LIR-in, SJO-out) is often the smartest routing. You cover more of Costa Rica without backtracking, and most major airlines price it the same as a round trip.
